Industrial Development

The Village of Hartford has long been the home of Schiber Truck, National Maintenance and Repair, Piasa Motor Fuels, Conoco Lube Oil, and a number of pipe line companies. The newest industrial addition is BOC Gases.

Schiber Truck Company started their Hartford business in 1954 with fourteen dollars in cash and one hundred dollars worth of gasoline on credit. They are now licensed to transport waste in 38 states and have earned numerous safety    awards from the National Tank Truck Carriers. A true hometown success story. We thank Schiber Truck for always being a great community supporter!

National Maintenance and Repair, located along the Mississippi River employs over 300 people. They repair barges, along with marine and other motors. The village, with the assistance of a Federal E.D.A. Grant extended a wastewater line to better serve this growing business. National Maintenance and Repair works well with the village on equipment exchanges and other civic projects.  National Maintenance is a great partner!

Piasa Motors Fuels not only specializes in the delivery of high quality lubricants from their modern warehouse in Hartford, they also maintain 25,000,000 gallons of motor fuel for shipment via pipeline, truck and barge. In 1988 Piasa Motor Fuels started a small chain of 24 hour convenience stores with one located on Route 3 in Hartford.  Piasa has property for lease adjacent to their development.  Contact Bill Schrimpf for more information 618-254-7341.

Conoco, Inc. currently employs 100 people in the light oil products terminal established here in the 1950's. In 1973, they expanded into warehousing of lube oil products. By 1981, their business had grown to include blending and packaging facilities.  The Village of Hartford in cooperation with local business, the Economic Development Agency and the Village of Roxana  upgraded Conoco's water and wastewater services to better serve this business.

BOC Gases is a  newcomer to the community, recently establishing a $40 million state of the art air separation plant in Hartford. BOC supplies gaseous oxygen to Conoco/Phillips to improve the refinery's ability to convert lower quality residual fuel oil into cleaner, lighter transportation fuels, like gasoline and diesel fuel. BOC's liquid and gaseous products are used by a wide variety of industries, including chemicals, fabrication, welding, food, electronics, glass, iron and steel.

BOC Gases executive vice president, Glenn Fischer, said that the area fit all five conditions needed for building a new facility. Those conditions are, a good pipeline customer, a good site, supportive community, good power rate and good labor pool. He went on to say that BOC usually only gets 3 out of five, but was able to get all five in Hartford. The Village of Hartford is very proud of this new industrial development and would like to bring additional linked industry to our community.
